[Bug 811037] [NEW] provide a way to get stderr as well

Public bug reported:

You can currently get stdout of a pipeline and process the output in the
calling program (using _want_out, etc.); but this only currently catches
stdout.

It would be helpful if it was possible to catch both what is sent to
stdout and what is in stderr.
