this is fixed in 11.04/natty. updated compiler packages for maverick can
be found in the ubuntu-toolchain-r PPA

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gcc-4.5

  The attached 3 lines of source code causes the command
  gcc-4.5 -c -o /dev/null cpl_geom_img.c -std=c99
  to fail with
  cpl_geom_img.c: In function ‘my_func’:
  cpl_geom_img.c:2:5: internal compiler error: in build_binary_op, at c-typeck.c:9849

  The bug is also reproducible also on a 32-bit Ubuntu 10.10
  installation running on a Intel Atom 230.

  The bug is _not_ reproducible on several 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10
  installations.

  The bug is also triggered with one of -std=c89 and
  -std=iso9899:199409.

  The bug is _not_ triggered  with gcc-4.4.

  The bug is reproducible by a user at llvm.org, see
