Based on the error message, it appears that you might be experiencing
some hardware problems.
After using your computer for a while, you might try checking the output
of the dmesg command to see if any hardware errors are being reported.

Title:
can't resize partition
Status in “gparted” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
I booted Ubuntu 11.04 from a live-usb and tried to resize my main
ubuntu partitition with Gparted 0.7.0, but for some reason it keeps
failing. I tried turning SwapOff, but that made no difference. After
3 attempts, I'm a bit stumped and would appreciate any help. I've
attached the detail log.
