I'm sorry, this error may have been caused by trying to write to a
partition that was too small for the installation. It appears that the
9.04 installation crashed a few years ago when I improperly partitioned
the drive. I didn't want to try to repartition & reformat because I had
a working copy of WIN XP on the drive with important existing data.
Since then I have migrated to new drives and just transferred this drive
to retain archives of the old data. Installer saw old 9.04 installation
and offered option to upgrade. My mistake. I will make an attempt to
install to a new reformatted, properly sized partition, and then update
this bug.

Title:
installer crashed
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
installation attempt from USB of 11.04 onto a machine running WIN7.
Installer reported existence of 9.04 on system and asked whether I
wanted to upgrade to 11.04, install a clean OS with reformat and one
other option I forgot. I chose to upgrade 9.04 to 11.04. Installation
appeared to proceed with no difficulties, downloaded 30 files and
installed them, removed incompatible files, and then downloaded
language packs. Following language pack installation, hardware
configuration was in progress when the installer crashed. This was the
first attempt at the install, and I have two var/log files to upload
for you
