  Ubuntu 11.04 : Could not initialize the package information

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The following error crops up on my Gnome Desktop(Classic ubuntu) on
  the Top gnome panel for the update manager:

  ------------------------
  An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

  Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
  include the following error message:

  'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

  This, after setting update manager to check for updates everyday.

  Searched similar bugs but this is unique because it is the
  "us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages"
  and for Ubuntu 11.04 specifically.

  Cannot update new packages anymore. Security updates also not
  available anymore.
