Hmm, after swapping out the hard drive a TOSHIBA_MK2555GSX for a
WDC_WD2500BEVS I was able to succesfully install Grub!

A work around for the TOSHIBA drive was to boot to a live 10.10 and
manually install Grub in a chroot environment.

Bug description:
  I'm getting this error when trying both 11.10 and 12.04 (daily update)
  alternative using lvm and crypto devices.

  If anyone can suggest a work around I would be extremely grateful!
