I believe this issue has been fixed... I have been installing Natty32/64
and Oneiric32/62 onto USB-Sticks from my notebooks without having my
main MBR being overwritten.

Title:
d-i does not provide a way to select which drive to install grub to

Status in “debian-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
These days Ubiquity provides a selection for which drive to install
grub to. This is vital for people whose systems do not boot from the
first disk that the kernel detects. The same ability needs added to
  the alternate installer.
