Sorry for the non-response at the original report. Since the issue seems
not present in current versions (some other update-manager issues are
being worked out), I'm closing the bug. Please feel free to reopen (by
marking it as "new") if the same issues are being seen with current
versions of Ubuntu.
** Package changed: update-manager-core (Ubuntu) => update-manager

Title:
do-release-upgrade issues 7.10 to 8.04.1 - nvidia, dnsmasq, battery-
applet, hostname, sudo, localedef
Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: update-manager-core
While and after do-release-upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04.1 i had these
issues:
localedef failed multiple times and had to be stopped via kill.
localedef stalled.
i rebooted and fixed it with dpkg reconfigure -a and a normal update
upgrade. then the localedef completed without complaints.
further problems:
hostname is not set up right until you touch your config again, sudo was slow and complained about the hostname,
dnsmasq does not cache dns lookups anymore
battery-applet was disabled
mozilla-gnash-plugin and gnash caused problems. i removed them from my system.
the restricted nvidia driver does not work anymore. will not enable
after the reboot. i can select the driver, but the setting will not
persist. the screen resolution is wrong also.
the rest seems to work fine.
