I'm unable to reproduce this in a lucid chroot because do-release-
upgrade -d is failing miserably for me before the upgrade even begins...

  The base image is a fresh installation of Lucid. During upgrade, the user is prompted to update the following unmodified configuration files:

  /etc/init/networking.conf
  /etc/network/if-up.d/upstart
