I just don't understand, how it can be fixed if it isn't!!!!!
This problem still exists into the latest release 11.10.
Why it suddenly has a problem after release upgrade seems to be a mystery!
There are a lot of proposed workarounds, but non of them has brought my eth0 back alive on boot.

Strangely, on another piece of hardware (different) it doesn't seem to have an effect.
Oh, well... good thing we don't have to reboot too often, however on power outages and limited backup through UPS it will most certainly a pain in the neck, in particular if you have to do this on multiple boxes.

Title:
  /var/run/network not created

Status in “ifupdown” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ifupdown

I installed from the Flight 7 LiveCD via ubiquity, where networking
  was working properly.

Upon first system boot, no networking was functional.

  > ifup eth0
ifup: failed to open statefile /var/run/network/ifstate: No such file or directory

  fixed by:
  > cp -r /etc/network /var/run

  After this, networking functions properly.

The install log doesn't have much to say about it, nor does dmesg or
  syslog.
