@Brian Murray,

It would appear you are correct. Further tests proved the hard drive is
faulty. All in order now that a new hard drive has been installed.

For the record, memory is fine and system self-diagnostics reported no
fault apart from the hard drive (S.M.A.R.T Hard drive failure immenent)

  verified (in Windows).

  Error as per (automatically) attached logs.

  Will retry with fresh install to see if it replicates bug.
