I'm having a similar problem with oneiric.  The console comes up with white background and dos-like block characters.
No latin characters at all.

setupcon doesn't help.

  1. login into console
  2. switch consoles away and back
  3. produce some non-latin text
  4. the font looks corrupted: non-latin symbols are replaced with very white DOS-like symbols.
