my bug is actually a duplicate of

rsyslog doesn't create /dev/xconsole
Ubuntu “rsyslog” package Bugs Bug #459730

it is exactly the same, and I am not the only one waiting for a solution. there are other posts in ubuntuforums general help that point to the same.
after reading the discussion on 459730 it seems some people know how to fix it, but there is no patch, not even a workaround sticky.
pls help, my 11.10 has been frozen for a week now. never had such a serious issue with an official release.

Title:
  desktop freeze

Status in “rsyslog” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
system reaches the login prompt and freezes. nothing works at this time.
syslog shows 'unable to open pipe /dev/xconsole' coming from rsyslogd. it says to look at rsyslog.com/e/2039
  but there is nothing there.
it smells like a permissions issue where the daemon does not have write permission.
not sure why it happened. I can drop to root shell using the recovery mode.

  pls advise what to do.

  it is ubuntu 11.10
