Since you mentioned the installer hangs, I'm not sure what the procedure
is.. but you can try this:

Add some persistent space when using usb-creator-gtk if you haven't done so already (so you can make a hard restart and have the logs saved).
Use sudo ubiquity --debug to start the installer (Note that passwords will be logged in debugging mode).
Later you can use apport-collect 838331 /var/log/installer/debug /var/log/syslog /var/log/partman
and with luck the needed info is there.
