I have very similar error,

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include
the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/fr.archive.ubuntu
.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists
or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

Again I had a hard reboot of the system after the screensaver refused to let me back onto the system.
Everything appeared to be working but now I note the update-manager is not working.

  After a power-outage Ubuntu failed to load. I had to use fsck to force
  rewrite in one block after a short-read error was detected from live-
  cd. Ubuntu then started normally, but update manager is now broken,
  reporting the above error.
