I think the apt history log pretty much tells the story.

Probably unrelated but something that has me a little bit stumped is
that apport seems not to recognize (or accept) my password. When
attempting to file this report I finally had to just click on cancel but
to my surprise the report completed anyway.

But I got a couple of crash reports immediately upon the desktop booting
(probably jockey related) and I was unable to send those reports. I
swear it sort of acts like Debian - like it wants a root password rather
than my user password. Does that make any sense?

Bug description:
  I'm testing the Lubuntu oneiric alternate CD 20110827-i386 and I've
  run through the process twice to be certain this could be reproduced.
  Upon completing the installation the installed size per gparted is
  only 952.79 MB, and trying to boot simply fails.

  If I boot into recovery mode via grub and select the netroot option
  running apt-get -f install shows nothing but running apt-get install
  lubuntu-desktop installs the full meal deal similar to what's seen
  after performing a cli/minimal install. I'll attach the apt logs if
  not included by apport-collect.
