Title:
Ubuntu 8.10 unable to find suitable kernel for Cyrix 6x86MX CPU

Status in “base-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: base-installer

When I attempted to install Ubuntu 8.10 server on my old IBM 6x86MX
PR200 system the installation would halt when the installer attempted
to choose a suitable kernel (and failed to locate one). Thanks to a
virtually identical report on the ubuntu forum -
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1044091 - I was able to work
around the problem by adding a "CyrixInstead" test to /usr/lib/base-
  installer/kernel.sh during the installation.

The following points are raised by this:

  1) Unidentified CPUs are configured as 486 - not unreasonable if the installer could actually locate a suitable kernel for 486s but it appears that it cannot. I do not have a working i486DX system to test.
  2) When I tried making my 6x86MX identify as a 686, a kernel was found and installed but when the system booted the kernel would not start due to the lack of PAE support. This is a problem with Ubuntu server and many CPUs (see bug 227869 for details). I chose to install Ubuntu server rather than desktop as my computer only has 128MB of RAM.
  3) I finally made kernel.sh report 586 for my 6x86 and I now have a functional system.

  Details of my system:
