Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and to improve Ubuntu.
The last update time shown is the time since the last successful update, which was right before you had the first 404 for the non-existing smplayer repository. The smplayer repository is not empty, but it does not exist at all, the latest version it does have packages for is lucid. What would you suggest as a solution in this case?
I consider this as the right behavior, as when we do get 404 errors for such repositories, we can't tell that the respository information was updated at the time of the (failed) update, as the repositories did not get updated, only partially.

Title:
update manager reports last update day after smplayer installation
Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal
update-manager: 1:0.150.3
After installing smplayer, i did find out that the repository for natty was empty. Now every time that i check for updates, there is an error:
"Failed to download repository information: Check your internet connection.
Details: W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/rvm/smplayer/ubuntu/dists/natty/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/rvm/smplayer/ubuntu/dists/natty/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
When i close, sometimes updates are available and i can install them, notifier works. But Update Manager says:
" Software updates my be available for your computer."
" The package information was last updated 12 days ago. Press the "check" button to check for new software updates."
i can fix this by removing the smplayer repository, but its still a
bug right xD
