After updating all software, the problem remains the same. On the other PC, everything works fine with same version of Ubuntu (11.04), only that its 64-bit, unlike this one, which is 32-bit. But the problem is in hardware I guess... 
I also encountered some problems during installation of Ubuntu on this machine (HDD just stopped working, maybe poor contact. I detached and reattached the power plug of the HDD and then it worked), but when I restarted the installation process, it installed properly. After the restart, at login the message appeared saying something about the desktop needed to be in "classic Ubuntu" due to a hardware resources being too low or something like that. (the words were different, but I guess, that was the meaning of it). After second restart, it logged in with Ubuntu desktop and not the classic one...
