turnick, thank you for your suggestion.

You're right that the current interface does not give a good overview of
updates and their details. However, your proposed design would not do
that either.

You can see this even in your own screenshot, where the Changes ("Cambiamenti") tab does not contain any useful information apart from version numbers, because the software source you are using has no changelogs. And even with a repository that does have changelogs, they are not written in a way that is appropriate for end users. Compare typical changelogs from Ubuntu, Apple, and Google:
<https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shotwell/0.10.1-0ubuntu2>
<http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1411>
<http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=112057>

For that reason, my current specification for Update Manager
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdates> would require a click and a
drag to show the changelog. However, it's still possible that the
changelog could be shown horizontally, as shown in your mockup, rather
than vertically as it is now. I suggest taking the sketch at
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdates#expanded> and editing it to
show how it would work in the new design.

Bug description:
  According to me the actual interface of Update Manager is old and does
  not give a good overview of the updates and their informations. It's
  simple to risolve this problem: we can divide the interface into two
  parts vertically, not horizontally: once shows updates; the other
  shows informations of the selected update. In this way we can see more
  updates even if we want to see their information. Instaed of this,
  actually, if we want to see informations about an update, the screen
  is divided into parts horizontally and the list of updates is not
  visible.

  I updated a screenshot to show you how solve this problem, sorry for
  the bad quality.
