I'm not sure this is needed. The phrase "Check for updates" appears if
you right click on the tray icon, I believe.

Title:
Karmic: Inconsistency between "Check for updates" in instructions and
button label "Check" in update manager
Status in “update-notifier” package in Ubuntu:
In Progress
Bug description:
Binary package hint: update-manager
When reporting out-of-date package information, a notification icon
appears. The text when hovering over this icon is:
The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network
problem or by repository that is no longer available. Please update
manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for
updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail.
However, after clicking on the icon to launch Update Manager, the text
of the button is merely 'Check' rather than 'Check for updates'.
