I need to say thank you to everyone who has emailed me here or privately
with ideas.  I'm grateful.  I sorted it out early this morning when I awoke
to a brilliant white light knowing that I've always been setting the
default router to the server ip rather than the gateway.  There's a big
duhh there...  and I never did get back to sleep!

I've got another problem with Java and I'll ask that in a new post.
