Hello Jeff,
you could try with ppa, i've build with #24 and #26 "solutions" in mind
... but it's not the solution for me, so i think this bug is multi-level:
 - maybe poppler/cairo
 - maybe ps/eps versus pcl
 - maybe cups filters workflow
 - maybe another one

but the result is: slow slow slow printing with LTS 10.04 :-(

In your case, ppa could be the solution, i hope so.
