Yes. This one did the trick for me.

flyboy at mcbuntu2:/media$ ls -la flyboy

usbdisk-sdb1 shows owned by root, but as soon as the user try's to
access it the permissions are properly set and everything works as expected.
I vaguely remember that external media is unmounted after a short
period of inactivity so that
kids can pull there drives without have to mess about with un-mounting
them "a la windows".
