firefox local app and default applications

Hi,

We're experimenting with Firefox as a local app.  Now we have flash, 
java and pdf plugins local as well so that they work, but we've just 
come across the situation where a user clicks on a word doc link and of 
course Firefox won't open OpenOffice because it's not installed in the 
local system.  Is there a way around this other than installing OOo 
locally too (which I don't want to do)?

How can the 'default app' for firefox to trigger not be local?
