I think this is a good time to mention ebox as an easy-to-manage gui for the
services you seek on ubuntu.  Whether you run your transparent proxying
filter as a stand-alone machine (ideal) or virtualized with something like
VirtualBox (okay), many edubuntu users may find the menu and tools of ebox
helpful.  It's a good tool, for instance, for establishing a roaming profile
samba server.
