Failed authentication

Good day to all,
I have my first lab up and running 8.04 edubuntu. Client accounts fail at
first authentication, incorrect password or words to that effect, but
immediate retry with same credentials and client is logged in. I googled
this with no success. Any insight is much appreciated.
