where are default icons for desktop icons stored?

Hi all,

I want to create a custom icon to replace the default "short cut" icon
on the gnome desktop.
I can't see any information that lets me know where this icon is
normally stored. I assume it's hiding somewhere in /usr/share/icons
This is a stock version of edubuntu 7.04

an aside--i'd love to be able to "push a short cut" with a custom icon
like you could in k12ltsp

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.
