Edubuntu 7.1 LTSP

I have just setup a new server utilizing Edubuntu 7.1 LTSP.  While
testing, I noticed that it seems a little slow authenticating the user's
password.  Is this do to the encryption?  How does one go about turning
off all of the encryption stuff?  It isn't necessary in our environment.
 I have used K12LTSP for the last 3 years and am now changing over to
Edubuntu LTSP.
