You might get some clues doing this:

Try the login again and look at:

1. The file .xsession-errors in that user's home directory.  There's likely
   to be some warnings normally anyway, but look for something terminal.

2. Set the password on the thin clients, login to the console of the thin
   client and look in the thin client logs in /var/log/, particularly
   ldm.log

3. Look on the server at /var/log/auth.log where you should be able to
   check the user authenticated correctly.
