Thin clients freeze hard when out of RAM

Our thin clients lock up completely and will not except any user input when running
graphic intense tasks. This doesn't seem right to me. Is there a way that a client
could be set to stop loading graphics and just give an error message when reaching a
certain RAM threshold? Then a user could just click ok and close the window or
something instead of a hard reboot leaving stale user processes running on the server
that hose them up if they try to re-login.
