disappearing programs

If you know the name of the actual program, you can find it in a terminal by typing "which nameofprogram", (i.e. "which firefox"  or you can use the search tool in places.

I have installed some programs via the add/remove programs function, but
some of the new programs are not showing up in the menus.  Does anyone have
any ideas where they might be going?
