Did you download the driver from the linux-wlan-ng guys or are you using
the ubuntu package? Not having used this type of card, I'm not sure what
the steps are, but in case you're not aware of it, I'll just point out the
linux-wlan-ng package in ubuntu (and edubuntu) which you should be able to
install from the synaptic package manager (under administration).

The package description says
"The standard Ubuntu kernel already contains all necessary drivers. This
package ships utilities and integration scripts to make above cards work
seamlessly with the Ubuntu network infrastructure."
so I would have thought that it should work fairly simply once you have
these tools installed.
I think instructions involving /etc/hotplug/ are probably out date as the
hotplug subsystem was replaced by a system called udev in recent releases.
This forum post suggests it was working a little buggily in Nov 2005 but
that bug has since been fixed so I'd hope it would work well now.

That's probably because you don't have development tools (which include
make) installled. It seems like you should be able to use the
linux-wlan-ng driver and it's definitely preferred over the ndiswrapper
one.
Let us know how you get on,
Gavin
