Bear in mind that a thin client server need not necessarily be an extremely
powerful machine.  I don't have figures, but a single modern desktop
machine should support quite a few thin clients without great trouble.  The
main constriction on number of users is RAM.  So, if you can get a gig or
two of RAM with a late P3 or a P4 you can probably run 5-10 thin clients on
it -- this would make good use of your oldest hardware.

If you need to shave a little more performance, using the XFCE desktop
instead of GNOME will apparently save you quite a bit of RAM.  The only way
to tell numbers for sure is to try it out.
