install screen resolution too low - how to adjust?

Thanks to all who responded on this.  I successfully used
dpkg-reconfigure to do the job (although I had to do it twice to
get it to stick).

Actually I first tried the way David suggested, just editing xorg.conf
by hand, but my changes weren't preserved.  I found that X overwrote
them next time I logged in.  Not sure why it would work for you but
not me....
