problems with 9.04 that seems to disapper with 8.04 and am I able to run applications on thin client locally on 8.04

8.04 is an LTS release, so that would be why it's lacking these bugs.  I
can't say for sure whether karmic has them fixed or not, at this point
there's no harm in trying.  As for backing up your account info, just
backup /etc/passwd and /etc/groups.
