Old client CPUs cannot cope with much network traffic if ssh encryption
is on (=the default).
Read the docs about the LDM_DIRECTX lts.conf parameter:

You'll gain much in performance at the cost of lower security.
E.g. in my school 10 ancient LTSP PCs can be playing full screen video
with no dropped frames and with only 50% CPU usage, both at the clients
and the server.
