Running edubuntu inside VMware...

Installing any software will need superuser permissions. You can use
sudo apt-get install $name_of_program.
sudo needs your own password, ubuntu doesn't ship with root enabled.
Educational games:
tuxmaths
tuxtype
tuxpaint
kdeedu
