Some concern has been raised though over how much information might be
"leaked" out over the existing messaging system. The current one (AFAIK)
only passes a list of available sessions. Giving a way to infer, eg valid
usernames might not be desirable.

Sounds like a reasonable idea to me. Even if the ideas get discarded it
would be nice to gather them together.
