Login Screen Extremely Distorted

That's it Gavin.

One important? point though: prior to the upgrade the screen resolution of
Edubuntu 6.10 suddenly changed to 640x480 with no apparent explanation.
There was no suggestion of a higher resolution even though it had been
working fine.
