Having read some of that, I think your statement is a little misleading
about XFCE.  The conclusion about GNOME vs KDE certainly appears to stand
up.  

In real life, KDE users do not exclusively use KOffice and Konqueror and
GNOME users do not necessarily stick with Epiphany and Abiword.  Both sets
of users very often use OpenOffice and Firefox for reasons I don't imagine
need elaborating.  Edubuntu installs and suggests those apps by default for
much the same reasons.  It's clear this has a high price though.
