I used a little roadside emergency device that had a battery, penumatic 
pump, floodlight and a few other things attached. It's basically 
designed as an emergency starter, so it plays nice with car batteries. 
It takes 15 volts CD in on the charger side, so we just spliced the 
appropriate plug onto an available solar panel and used that to extend 
the time between charges.

A friend of mine from the Vanuatu Renewable Energy and Power Assocation 
put the system together, and I adapted it for use with computers. If
