To Whom it may concern,

This was originally sent to Thomas Black and a machine generated
response suggested that I re-send the e-mail to the above address. I
sincerely hope that this message doesn't get lost in electronic limbo
somewhere and that I will get a swift response.

I have been working on a Swiss funded project dealing with e-waste for
the past 18 months. If you are interested you can view the reports and
other documentation on the website www.icando.co.za/current.htm which
might give you some idea of the context within which I am trying to get
the life of hardware extended. "The computer is of more value to South
Africa as a computer than as its components or raw materials", I am
trying to see if we can assist in capacity building previously
disadvantaged members of our society with respect to computer literacy.
I do recognise that the machines eventually will wear out and at that
stage they will be recycled but until then we want to keep them in
service. I am aware of the work that your organisation has been
involved in Limpopo Province with HP/Compaq.

However, I have another project that will be located at a school "Lily
of the Valley" in Camperdown where the Church of England in South Africa
is managing an AIDS Orphan Project. The school has grown out of that
project. A number of desktops (60) and crt screens have been donated by
the Department of Environmental Services and Tourism. The class room is
built and is being furnished.

I have persuaded the management of the project to opt for Open Source
software. I am familiar with Linux, Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird
and Evolution. In fact my office has been running Linux based software
for nearly 6 years now. I recently came across a copy of an early
version of Ubuntu (the three person ring) and I have heard that there is
a new generation (the five person ring). We would like to use Ubuntu in
this school application. How do I get copies? Will it work in a server
environment. I am thinking of using LTSP with old machines being set up
as "thin clients". Will that work? If you don't have the answers
perhaps you might direct me to someone in your organisation that could
assist me.

Sincerely yours,
Ray Lombard
