First, let me apologize for the time it took for me to get to write this
email; I've reviewed the information that was available and the
historical data for this application, and given that there should be a
meeting in a few hours, I thought it would be appropriate to give my
vote here now.
It's a difficult decision taking an application that was already in
progress and trying to build myself an idea of the person, of his
skills...
I vote +0.
I've seen some pretty good work from Jackson, but digging in I can not
find great examples of non-trivial work that would be a testament to
what I would expect of someone in MOTU.
From reading the previous emails I understand Jackson isn't a
programmer, but someone interested in packaging work for the moment.
This is good, as the help is definitely needed. I do see good merges, I
think I see an understanding of the impact of transitions, but I also
see enough room for improvement to recommend that he apply again at a
later time (say, two or three months from now?).
I understand we can't exactly expect to see complex FTBFS fixes from
someone who might not know coding very well, but this is one area where
I think a little more involvement would be good. I'm sure some
approachable universe FTBFS fixes can be found.
I'm also curious as to what kind of testing has been done on some of the
latest syncs in vivid-changes. Jackson, could you explain what testing
process you've gone through to verify that say, fasttree or the grml*
packages you synced were working properly, even if it's a very quick
check?
Finally, Jackson, please feel free to ask questions and to ping me
directly when you need sponsoring, in the event that I have time to
help.
