[Bug 89900] blank screen when booting with lid closed

Public bug reported:

When I turn my Dell Inspiron 1501 on with the lid closed, the screen stays blank when it's done with booting.
Restarting gdm doesn't work (ctr-alt-backspace & via tty1 /etc/init.d/gdm restart), changing to terminal with ctr-alt-f1 works.

Booting with or without usplash makes no difference
