Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Sorry, unknown circumstances. Whatever happened occurred when the
machines was unattended. Came back to discover a mostly solid pink
screen with some random garbage. Restarting X cleared it up. X hadn't
been restarted in several weeks, so it likely was an obsolete version.
