[Bug 90394] system borked after testing login sound

Public bug reported:

I'm using Feisty, up-to-date as of today (March 7, 2007).

On some previous day I had brought up the System -> Preferences -> Sound
dialog, clicked on the "Sounds" tab, and selected the sound "Login" for
the Log In event. The change seems to have worked just fine (although I
do get the goofy effect of hearing the sound twice, since GDM appears to
play that same sound as well even when I'm starting a KDE session.)

Anyway, today I decided to disable that particular event's sound since I
was hearing it twice at startup. To make sure I was about to disable
the correct sound, I clicked on the little 'play' (triangle icon) button
for the Log In event's sound (on the aforementioned dialog / tab). When
I do this, I get the following effects until I actually reboot the
system (restarting X and/or GDM are not sufficient):

- that sound settings dialog becomes unresponsive and no longer redraws
itself

- after I've caused this problem but before I subsequently log out, I
can't start any new programs from within Gnome.

- if I restart X (ctrl-alt-bksp) and log back into a Gnome session, I'm
just faced with a blank, brown screen. No sounds, no startup dialog,
nothing. I'm pretty sure I do see the mouse cursor and can move it,
thought.

- If I restart X and log into KDE, that seems to go OK at first. But
when, within KDE, I launch the Start -> Settings -> Services app, the
app's main window comes up but the list of services is never populated.

All four of those symptoms go away if I reboot the system, but as
mentioned earlier, just restarting X and/or GDM is not sufficient.

About my system:
- Notebook model: HP Pavilion dv4000

- `uname -a`: Linux peace 2.6.20-9-generic #2 SMP Mon Feb 26 03:01:44
UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

- `lspci | grep audio`:
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04)

- I've noticed no other problems with audio on this system, although I
really haven't done much with it under Feisty.

** Affects: control-center (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
