[Bug 89652] dependencies will not resolve

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-dev

when installing through synaptic package manager or apt-get the
following comes up:

libgtk2.0-dev:
 Depends: libxcursor-dev but it is not going to be installed
 Depends: libxfixes-dev but it is not going to be installed

when trying to install libfixes-dev the following comes up as error:

ibxfixes-dev:
  Depends: libxfixes3 (=1:3.0.1.2-0ubuntu3) but 1:4.0-0ubuntu1 is to be installed

Attempt to uninstall libfixes3 so libfixes can be put in will give an
unattractive result of removing gdm, gnome and half the system


Please excuse the ignorance but I do not know how to get out of the silly reasining loop. Maybe I'm too new at this... :-)

ps I have done apt-get update and apt-get upgrade and it does not help
