Same behavior for me, hda intel on macbook (core 2 duo) using feisty up
to date.

More than this, recording does never work, nor the first time. 
In gnome-sound-record I have tried both mux and capture as input source. 
On volume-control the only mic that is turned off is the one of capture, mux stays on (but does not work either)

BTW, mic does not work at all also with apps like skype, ekiga ecc...
but I can listen other people speacking.
