Thanks for your help. I enabled bootclean with 'update-rc.d bootclean defaults'; the version of the initscripts package is '2.86.ds1-14.1ubuntu16'. Hope this helps - let me know if you need any more information! -- gdm's socket in /tmp is deleted by bootclean https://launchpad.net/bugs/79620
